Boston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40

Under Helgeson’s continued leadership over the past 14 years, Merchant Warehouse has grown to an industry leader, processing $8 billion a year in sales and more than 12 million transactions each month. Despite the struggling economic conditions over the past five years, Helgeson has played an active role in raising Merchant Warehouse’s annual revenue from just over $27 million to $54 million. The company’s annual revenue is projected to exceed $70 million in 2012. Business growth has led to an increase in employees from 80 in 2007 to nearly 300 today.

Helgeson’s vision for the payments industry greatly shaped his position on the 2012 list. As consumers become increasingly mobile, he’s working to ensure that business owners of all sizes are able to leverage the experiential tools to generate new business and improve loyalty with returning customers. Helgeson’s design of the company’s Genius Customer Engagement Platform, a future-proof payment solution that allows merchants to accept any mobile payment option, is key to this vision and the concept that payments are becoming more about experience rather than a simple credit or debit swipe.
